 Splunk 6.4 Developer

 Developed Splunk WK applications and dashboards (dozens) on Windows Server 2008 and 2012 for:

 a) Vendor Analysis (Rackspace, NTT, Century Link, IBM, T-Systems and Dell) for Performance Monitoring, Inventory, Ticketing, Utilization, Invoice cross-checking, email Alerts;

 b) E1 (JDE) - Exception/Error Analysis, Front and Back Office Analysis, System Performance, Correlation; 

 c) Capacity Management (Performance Monitoring, Capacity Planning, Upgrade Cost Analysis, Utilities);

 d) Currently working on a consolidation of multiple business units into fewer servers. Migrating Splunk indexes and search heads from secure areas to DMZ for global company use.

 e) Wrote Javascript, when necessary to support the above dashboards).

 Developed Splunk Applications from end-to-end: indexing using data inputs from a variety of sources  (forwarders, databases - using DB Connect, ODBC, JDBC) or local file system), creating searches and dashboards.

Splunk 5.0.2 Developer

a)       Wrote Splunk pre-processor in Perl 5 which parses Trizetto Facets XML logs and transformed them into Splunk ‘accessed combined’ sourcetype - 8000 lines of code. Wrote Splunk searches and built 12 dashboards and ~50 panels for Blue Shield business areas, and  3 dashboards and 12 panels for SQL activity, file statistics,  engine allocation..

b)       Wrote Splunk pre-processor in Perl 5 which gathered Tidal job scheduling data from Oracle, MySQL and MS SQL Server tables, and transformed them into Splunk sourcetypes – 600 source lines of code. Wrote Splunk searches for 17 dashboard panels.

c)       Dashboard panels include searches using: charts, timecharts, tables, stats, rex, eval,  macros, summary indexing, multiple indexing and the various function libraries.

d)       Installed and used these Splunk apps: *Nix, Deployment Monitor, Sanity Check, Afterglow, Enterprise Batch Ops, Splunk on Splunk, Sideview and DB Connect.

e)       Worked at the Advanced XML level when necessary.

f)        Configured Search Heads, Indexers and Universal Light Forwarders.

 September 2011 – November 2012.  Consultant.  Contractor with  OpalSoft, Inc.

 Senior Systems Analyst / Architect. Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center – FNMOC

 a)       Implemented Splunk 4.3.1 for the FNMOC NEP-Oc, NESSO, Portal, Public and Weather websites on clusters of Linux servers. JavaScript SDK, Macros and Summary Indexing, Regex for patterns, Event Correlation and Data Integration among log files from different systems.

b)       Configured Splunk 4.3.1 to perform the web analytics for those sites. Migrated Splunk to production servers. Provided informal Splunk training to FNMOC personnel.

c)       Wrote the requirements for an upgrade to the Distributed Processing System (DPS). The DPS is the system which performs data acquisition of weather observation data from remote sites, stages it for the weather prediction models, takes the output from the models and distributes it to various consumers such as NOAA. There are 14 TBytes of data transferred per day.

d)       Re-designed the DPS using Visio UML diagrams, and built a prototype for the front-end in HTML, JavaScript, JQuery, AJAX,  and JQuery.validity.

e)       Wrote software in Perl 5.16 which analyzes the processing and performance of the current DPS in Perl.

 Senior Systems Analyst / Architect. (At Apple, Inc., Cupertino for 3 months) Implemented Splunk 4.3.1 using the JavaScript SDK, Macros and Summary Indexing for the mining of sales and accounting data.

 April 2009 – September 2011. Consultant. eDataTech  and Insignia Technology Services (Contractor at Defense Language Institute - DLI), Monterey, CA

 Senior Systems Analyst. Knowledge Information System Study. Performed a systems analysis which will lead to a complete overhaul of the present inter-departmental information system at the DLI and will be implemented as an Enterprise Information System. This phase of the project entailed “discovering” the work and data flows for more than 60 organizations at the DLIFLC. The work product was a set of 110 Visio Process Maps and UML diagrams.


Deputy Program Manager. Enterprise Information Management Environment (EIME). EIME is a project which consolidates many disparate legacy databases, share drives, applications and manual processes into a unified system. Performed the Concept Development and High Level Requirements Gathering and High Level Architecture and Design phases. Responsibilities included writing the Project Plans, the Software Requirements Specifications and the Design documents for each EIME Application in UML and Visio. Coordinated the data sharing, common functionality and interfaces with various stakeholders in different civilian and military organizations and school departments. Managed design and software development for the DLIFLC.edu website.

 May 2008 – April 2009.  Consultant. World Music Link, Inc, Carmel, CA

Lead Web Developer. Developed the www.worldmusiclink.com Web site using LAMP technology. It is a social/business networking site for the music industry. Developed the Project Plan and performed the daily project tracking and configuration control.

 June 2006 – June 2007. Sticky, Inc., Santa Cruz, CA

Director of Programs. This start-up company’s product was software which resided on SanDisk flash drives. The technology is ActionScript/Flash. Managed the day-to-day activities as a hands-on manager. Wrote ActionScript/Flash and developed an automated build system in Perl. Defined sprint cycles and held daily stand-up scrums to define the goals for the day.

Web Developer. Built an eCommerce Web site which sold high-end large format photographs of the Monterey Bay Area and Big Sur. All hands-on. Wrote the HTML/JavaScript code.

J2EE Framework, JAAS, JCE, JSSL, and other contemporary Java technology. Used UML for Analysis and Design. Wrote Performance Analysis Specification for Apache Web Server, WebLogic Application Server, and Oracle back end. Performed analysis for the selection of either JProbe or OptimizeIt.

Software Engineer. Infrastructure Engineering - Online Financial Services Group

Wrote the GUI for the Automated Software Distribution package, which runs over HPSD on Solaris. Perl, CGI, HTML. Analyzed and tested nCipher nForce and Rainbow CryptoSwift SSL accelerator/HSM cards, in conjunction with iPlanet Web Server 4.1 (SP2) and Apache Web Server, for their key management, storage, and performance capabilities.

 May 1999 – June 2000. Yipes Communications, San Francisco, CA

Project Manager. Managed a group which built trueIP, a software application which monitors and controls the Yipes Fiber Optic Network using SNMP. Responsible for the architecture, staffing, project planning, design and programming. Used UML for Analysis and Design. This was a hands-on management position.

VP/Director of Engineering. Knowledge Management Enterprise System 3-tier client/server architecture. Reported to CEO, interfaced with Product Development and Marketing. Partially hands-on. Developed an Architecture Improvement Plan which included analysis of J2EE.

Software Engineer.  Wrote requirements specifications, functional description, server side Java, servlets, AWT, and applets for this product.

Software Engineer. Wrote requirements specifications for, designed, and developed a distributed system, NetProbe, including a GUI front end, with which the user can probe a Wide Area Network and discover its configuration, edit the results, and create a new network topology using SNMP.

Architecture, development, implementation, testing, and delivery of a fully distributed client/server repository manager for Hardware Design Language files.

Software Engineer. Communications Satellite In-Orbit Tests, Ground Station Equipment and Signal Path Control; HP Instrument Control, Ethernet, TCP/IP, IEEE-488 (GPIB). Designed and implemented the Satellite Monitoring and Test System which executes the In Orbit Test (IOT) for the ChinaSat SBS3 Satellite. The software included the de-commutation of telemetry at the bit level.

Chief Engineer / Software Development Team Leader. Architect of a distributed system with seven subsystems for the NASA SETI Project. Wrote the architectural plan and designed the development and integration of the hardware and software. Wrote the software in C/C++ on HPUX.

 Developed the Spacecraft Autonomy Plan for a communications satellite which allows the spacecraft to operate autonomously, without ground intervention. Developed plan to use artificial intelligence in the ground station for advanced failure detection and correction.

 Lead Engineer for the Viking Orbiter Computer Command and Control Subsystem for the Extended Mission. Lead Engineer in the Mission Operations environment. Cognizant Programmer for the Orbiter Sequence Translator. This program translated scientists' and engineers' commands into sequences of event tables that controlled the Viking Orbiters from the Command and Control Subsystem Computer.
